    Waxing Q&A: WAXING UNIVERSITY

I’ve noticed that on the WTC website it mentions that cerologists have to go through Waxing University...what is this exactly? Furthermore, if people go to cosmetology school and want to work for WTC do they still need to go to Waxing U?

At Waxing the City we are dedicated to doing one thing and doing it well, waxing. Therefore in November of 2008 we opened Waxing University, a state of the art educational and training facility.

The first of it's kind, Waxing University was built to support overall company philosophies of "hiring the best and training them to be better" and to provide a learning environment for all employees.

Upon hiring, employees participate in Professional Growth Plans that include mandatory and optional training classes for each specific job classification. Employees complete a stringent training program and are required to meet a set of defined minimal waxing and front desk standards. On-going education is integrated into overall learning environment and company "employer of choice" strategies.

If you have a passion for waxing check us out at www.waxingthecity.com and fill out an application to join our team! Maybe we’ll see you in class!

    Eyebrow Waxing Trends

In celebration of the New Year we want to give you our thoughts on eyebrow trends to watch for in 2010...

Hide your tweezers ladies and pull out your eyebrow kits. Bigger, more dramatic brows are in!

We love the look! Stronger, thicker brows appear healthier and more natural. But, “bigger” doesn’t mean unkempt and messy. Well-groomed brows – whether thick or thin – is the goal. As one of our advertising campaigns says, “Don’t get caught under the mistletoe with a unibrow!”

Although thicker brows are the rage, it’s important that you work with what is best for the shape of your face and your features. As a general rule, if your features are larger and more prominent, a fuller brow looks better. More petite features look best with a subtle, thinner brow. Ask our trained cerologists for their expert advice on this key aesthetic issue.

In addition to waxing, at Waxing the City we offer and highly recommend the use of brow kits. Our kits include two shades of brow powder for shaping and filling in brows, as well as a brow pomade to hold your brows in place after grooming and in between waxings. Easy, fast and you’ll be thrilled with the results!

Waxing Q&A: How to Reduce the Redness After Waxing

I get waxed quite regularly and every time I always walk out with red bumps all over the area that was waxed. Any suggestions on how to reduce redness? I’ve heard tea tree oil and cold/hot compresses help, is this true?

Even regular waxers have to endure the embarrassing red bumps or patches.

The most common area to be effected by redness is the brow line. The skin on the face, and most especially around the eyes, is the most sensitive and delicate on the entire body; special care must be taken when waxing the brows, upper lip, etc. If you have fairer skin, you may tend to get what we call “pink eye shadow” or get blotches or bumps more readily than someone with darker skin. Keep in mind there are exceptions to this rule. But, also know that redness and bumps only last for a short time.

We try and help minimize the redness and bumps with Azulene oil, made of essential oils, lavender, sage, sandlewood. This wonderful smelling oil helps calm and soothe reddened skin after waxing.

A cold compress is a good option, as well. Cold will cause vasoconstriction, which narrows the blood vessels and slows the blood flow to an area. The cold compress will also help with inflammation if you’re feeling a little puffy after your wax.

Don't use a hot compress because it will do the opposite and, honestly, I don't think it will feel very good.

    Cheers,

    Alex

    Waxing Q&A: Waxing vs. Depilatories

I’ve been using an over the counter hair removal cream for my upper lip for a few years. The problem is that my hair grows back almost immediately. And, not only that, but I am starting to notice that my pores are getting bigger. Would waxing be a better alternative for me? What are the benefits of waxing vs. hair removal cream?

Over the counter products for hair removal are called depilatories. Depilatories are chemicals that simply "burn away" the hair above the surface of your skin. Depilatories essentially work the same way as shaving does in that the hair is still intact, lying below the skin, ready to resurface in just a few days.

Waxing, on the other hand, pulls the hair from the follicle (the part of the skin where the hair grows from), which is why your skin is free of hair for longer periods of time, because a new hair has to grow.

The benefits of waxing vs. depilatories are many. To name a few:

    1)    Hair will thin out over a period of consistent waxing
    2)    There are no harsh chemicals involved with waxing
    3)    Waxing is only needed once a month and after care is very simple.

As far as why your pores might be getting larger on your lip could be a result to a lot of different things. But, whatever the reason, remember that anytime you put a chemical on your skin you run the chance of having a reaction. We’d love to have you visit one of our Waxing the City studios to help explore your options or check out our Web site at www.waxingthecity.com

    Thanks!
