Chapter Four: Spray Tanning and Lash/Brow Tinting

We have a true story to share...

We had an individual spray tan and then stop by our salon for a quick lash/brow tint on her way to the airport. Well, the developer that was used in the tinting process reacted with pigment of the spray tan and turned her skin in those areas orange. So, there she was, with orange shaded eyebrows just in time for a vacation!

Morale of the story: get your tints before heading to the tanning booth!

Planning ahead is key! Don’t try to push all of your appointments into the day before your vacation starts! Waxing the City studios are open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday – Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (and, for those of you in downtown Denver, the Lodo salon is open Sundays) and our highly trained cerologists and our administrative staff will do their very best to help you schedule your appointments in a timely manner.

One of our clients told us we needed a "Rule Book" for summertime! So, we decided to give you exactly that!

Chapter Three: Spray Tanning and Waxing

Timing is everything! Waxing should occur BEFORE spray tanning (and again, remember the 24-48 hour rule!) Couple of reasons: first, if you spray tan before waxing it is probable that waxing will remove some of the tanning pigment as the outer layer of skin cells are removed during the waxing process. You certainly don’t want to pay for a beautiful tan and then have it removed prematurely or cause an uneven appearance of the tan.

We also recommend waiting 24-48 hours after your wax before entering that spray tanning booth. A short physiology lesson – waxing “opens” your pores, so if you spray tan immediately after waxing it is very possible some of the pigment from the spray tan will enter into your pores and can cause uneven tanning and darker spots to occur. Also heading straight from the waxing table to the spray tanning booth, often times there is a residue left on your legs post-waxng and this will effect the tan.

Make sure to read Chapter Four of the Waxing The City "Rule Book" For Summertime coming soon!

WTC "Rule Book" for summertime: Chapter Two, Tanning and Waxing

Are you getting ready for that big vacation and trying to get everything done last minute? No doubt many of you have a to do list that includes, "make waxing appointment" and "go to tanning salon." If this is the case, make sure that in all the hustle and bustle and packing and planning that you schedule those appointments carefully. One of our clients told us we needed a "Rule Book" for summertime! So, we decided to give you exactly that!

Chapter 2: Tanning and Waxing

It’s a simple rule: We strongly recommend that you do not get waxed 24 – 48 hours after sun tanning (whether on your back deck or at a tanning salon) and to also wait 24 – 48 hours to tan after waxing.

The reason for waiting is that if the skin is burned, we cannot perform our best service. With a sunburn, the integrity of the skin is not in a good state. Skin Lifting can occur when the skin is hyper-sensitive and that can lead to a painful waxing experience. If you come into Waxing the City sunburned, your cerologist will not be able to perform your scheduled service(s) until the burn heals.

If you get waxed first, we discourage you from being in the sun or a tanning bed for 24 – 48 hours. During waxing, a layer of skin is exfoliated and your skin is more vulnerable, most especially to the sun. This can cause severe burning and dark unsightly blotches referred to as hyper-pigmentation on the skin. If you are exposed to the sun after a wax, make sure to use a high SPF for your protection!

Chapter One:

Swimming Suits and the KILLER GROW OUT PERIOD...

Okay, sounds like a scary movie title, but by far, the Number #1 Question we get during the summer months is…How do I keep up my waxing routine during the summer when I am spending most of my time at the pool, in my bathing suit as it relates to the 4 week grow out period? What do you recommend?

Although this is a tricky situation, keeping a consistent waxing routine is important (anybody who hasn’t understands the consequences!) The goal is to keep that hair “conditioned” throughout the year. We can recommend several options for you to consider. We hope you can find an option that works best for you.

1) Wax every 3 weeks. This timeframe is considered early for most people, but it is an option. It won’t be the “perfect” wax, however it will remove a majority of the hair (but not all). This routine for the bikini area during the summer months does work for many people.

2) Tweeze or shave the outer part of the bikini line. We only recommend this option if hair doesn’t extend more than ½” from the bathing suite line.

3) Use a bottom cover-up. Many of our clients purchase cute boy short bottoms or similar version of a bathing suite to cover the area during the last week or two of the grow out period.

Make sure to read Chapter Two of the Waxing The City "Rule Book" For Summertime coming next week!

The first time it went pretty well, but it appears I missed some hairs – too many to tweeze. Can I re-wax the same area after two days?

Great question!

After two days, your skin will be fine to re-wax the areas where hairs were missed. The legs tend to have tougher skin that can handle a touch up.

I would recommend using a small amount of baby powder on your legs before waxing. This gives you a barrier between the wax and your skin to help prevent skin lifting or irritation.

You didn’t mention which part of your body you were waxing, but it’s important, especially when using home waxing systems, to be mindful of what type of wax you are using for what areas. When waxing larger areas such as the legs, it’s better to use soft wax with paper strips. For more sensitive areas, such as the face and the bikini line, it is better to use hard (or blue) wax where there is no need for paper strips.

How can I prevent breaking out after facial waxing?

Thanks for your question!

Breaking out after facial waxing is a common occurrence. After waxing, your own oil fills in the follicle clogging it and causing a pimple. People also tend to touch their face more often right after waxing, so the dirt and oil on their hands contributes to the blemishes.

If you regularly breakout after waxing, ask your cerologist to not use any post-wax oils normally used to soothe the skin. And, as hard as it is, try to not touch the area that has been waxed and keep the area clean of cosmetics for a couple of hours after.

Another solution to breaking out after waxing is the use of a High Frequency Machine. This is a hand held machine that delivers a small electrical current that kills surface bacteria. It is commonly used during facials after extractions to kill any bacteria from spreading. At Waxing the City, we have this machine and offer it to our clients free of charge. If you have continued issues with breaking out after waxing, just request this service from your cerologist!

Happy Waxing!
