We’ve all had a long winter and probably didn't commit as well as we would have liked to with our NYE resolutions. Although we are still making our way out of winter, it’s never too early to get into the summer swing of things – and busting out those bikini bods. After doing some serious research, we came up of a list of 5 tips we thought were the BEST for getting bikini ready. Check them out below:

Pick up some form of physical activity: We hate to admit this, but we know it’s probably the most important tip (and hardest to accomplish) when preparing for the bikini season. Adding some cardio to your day will not only help you shape up for the season, but will increase your mood, too. Since the weather is getting nicer, it will be easier to find fun activities you can do outside. Grab some friends, get out in the sun and work it!

Rest and drink PLENTY of water: Getting an appropriate amount of sleep is incredibly beneficial to your overall health and will play a very active role in helping revitalize your body for spring and summer. Aim to get around 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Also, drink plenty of water throughout the day. Most people do not drink nearly enough water each day and this can result in overeating and low energy levels. So if you want to both look and feel better this season, hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate!

Find a flattering suit: This goes without saying but finding a great suit for your body will make ALL the difference! Sure, it sucks going to the dressing room only to find that you hate every single option, but keep trying. Eventually you will find one you love and that fits you well. We could give you all the advice in the world for how to choose the best bathing suit, but ultimately you are the one who knows your body the best and what looks good. While you’re at it, why not pick out a flattering cover-up to go along with your newfound suit?

Wax and Exfoliate: Those long winter months have done nothing but wreck havoc on your skin. Winter brings dried, dead skin and exfoliating can help ease your skin back into its luscious, pre-winter state. Waxing is a perfect exfoliate and will help eliminate dry skin and can give you just the boost your skin needs. Besides you’re basically killing two birds with one stone when waxing: exfoliating and getting rid of that unwanted hair. Starting your waxing routine early in the season will help make sure you skin is ready in time for summer and will help curb your hair growth down the line. We would by lying as well if we didn't suggest a good assortment of body scrubs and loofahs. These are also helpful when exfoliating and they can make you wax last longer.

Consider a spray tan: Finally, after you’ve completed all the above four steps and you’re still not feeling beach ready, why not try a spray tan? Having a little extra color coming into the season will definitely boost your confidence. Just make sure to steer clear of that overly orange spray tan color and stay closer to your natural tone.

Overall, the best tip we can give is just to have fun! Spring and summer is a great time to start something new. In honor of this countdown to spring, we will be showcasing cute and unique bathing suits each week on our social media accounts. Check them out and let us know what styles you will be rocking this season!

February is a short month dedicated to that one seemingly impossible task: love. Whether you are spending the day with a new love or celebrating with friends, let’s review the history of this heart-filled holiday.

We’ve dug up the history books on this couple-tastic holiday and here is what we found. Five interesting facts on Valentine’s Day to help you celebrate, mourn or feel vindicated this February 14.

But first, we’re having a little social media contest on the 14 in the spirit of Valentine’s Day. Here are the details:

Post a photo of you or someone you know showing the love this holiday. Need an example? Here you go, check out photos from last year!. Two lucky winners, one from Facebook and one from Twitter, will win a $25 gift card to Waxing the City! So get at it, and show some love!

The History of Valentines Day is well. . . unknown: Everyone has heard that Valentines Day all started after a Saint named Valentine. Well actually, the legend behind this is unclear. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentius, all of whom were martyred. Some believe that Valentine’s Day was named after a bishop Valentine who was stationed in Rome. Claudius II was emperor at the time and he had installed a law that would not allow young men to marry, because unmarried men made better soldiers. Valentine in this story became an advocate for these poor lovesick soldiers and secretly married them. However, he was ultimately found out and jailed. Another version claims that an imprisoned Valentine fell in love with the daughter of the jailer. Just before he was to be put to death, he sent his love a note and signed it “from your Valentine” (hence how we get the phrase ‘From your Valentine’). The story spread and after his death he became known as a Patron Saint. Then Voila! We have Valentine’s Day!

The Original Valentines Day was actually a Pagan Holiday: Celebrated on the idles of February (Feb. 15), Valentines Day actually began as Lupercella – a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of Agriculture, as well as the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. Details of the actual festival are a little messy, but rumor is that this holiday was deemed “un-Christian” at the end of the 5th century so it ended and Pope Gelasius declared February 14 Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t until much later however, that this holiday became definitively associated with love. It was also believed during the Middle Ages in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of the birds mating season, which added to the fact that the middle of February should be dedicated to love.

Cards, cards and more CARDS! Many place blame on the card industry for the demise of this holiday. However, Valentine’s Day greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages and actual written valentines didn't appear until after 1400. The oldest known Valentine in existence is a love poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. As the holiday began gaining more and more popularity between the 17th and 18th centuries, couples young and old looked for new and interesting ways to share their feelings. But it wasn’t actually until 1840 that Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. She is known as the “Mother of the Valentine” and the Greeting Card Association estimates that about 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year!

Symbols galore: One can hardly enter into the month of February without being bombarded by hearts, chocolate, love cards and plenty more. Some of the most common symbols for Valentine’s Day is this era are cupids, hearts, roses, teddy bears and words of adoration. Everyone (well mostly everyone) knows that Cupid, with his arrows and bows, represents Roman mythology and that Cupid was the son of Venus the goddess of love. But what about chocolate- why is that important and so widely given out? Well clearly from the get-go chocolate was a favorite with its rich, divine and decadent flavor. Being that everyone enjoys chocolate, it’s only natural it became such a widely distributed item this month. Cadbury invented the first chocolate candies in the 1860s and was also the first to market them in a heart-shaped box for the holiday.

Although the true meaning behind Valentine’s Day has been skewed since the beginning the same principle applies- the appreciation for those you love and care about. No longer is Valentine’s Day just about celebrating couples but sharing with friends and family your appreciation for them. It’s easy to get lost in the glitz and overwhelming glamour of the heart shaped holiday, but try to remember single or not, Valentine’s Day is about those closest to you and celebrating love in all its forms. Ready to celebrate? Post a photo of you showing the love here.

Waxing the City here and we’ve got the low-down on all the trends, hype and not-so-fab fads that will be fading in 2013. While we patiently await the snow to melt and the green nubs of life to start sprouting, it’s time to reminisce on our smooth summer bodies and plan ahead for what is to come.

Last year was filled with everything from, (ah-hmmm), pejazzled lower regions to colorful fluffs of hair and feathers; even our youngest siblings stopped by the salon for to get their first eyebrow wax. Our hardcore boyfriends and husbands took that leap into the wonderful world of waxing after the spotlight was put on waxing by notorious celebrities (P. Diddy) and movies, such as Magic Mike.

While we were happy to see the trend of waxing take center stage, our predictions for this year have matured. This year, we expect waxing to take on a more experienced and established vibe. Those who wax know what they want and aren’t afraid to take risks. Take a look below at the trends and fads we predict will enter the main stage… while some will quietly curtsy off to stage right.

1. Manscaping is HUGE

Who knew that once we let our fellas close to the salon, we’d never get them back? A recent article in Cosmopolitan magazine showed an increasing number of men are manscaping to keep the hairiness away, and we’re not just talking about nostril hair.

Guys these days aren't worried that a little maintenance will make them seem less masculine, but quite the opposite. It has been expressed time and time again that men are just as particular when it comes to their body maintenance. According to a recent survey, 32 percent of men have turned to shaving, tweezing and waxing to keep their bushes in check. Another 10 percent copped to waxing their rears, while 29 percent admitted they’re fans of tweezing and waxing their eyebrows. Only a mere 28.8 percent of men say they preferred the natural look and didn't wax anything at all! It goes to show ladies that if you ask, you shall receive. So this year, we’re expecting even higher numbers of guys coming into the salon to wax just about everything (and yes, we mean the Brazilian). So pick a date, grab your guy and try some couple waxing this year for a sure to please bonding-sesh.

2. Those “down-there” fads are fading fast

All right so we’ll admit it, we were kind of intrigued by the vejazzling and the out of this world bikini shapes. I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle? Just like Jennifer Love Hewitt said in her infamous interview, it’s empowering! Bikini shapes allowed you to show your personal style, while also dressing up your ‘downtown’ for each and every season. Some salons even went as far as to offer their clients faux-fur and feathers to replace their hair. But just as fads typically fade, this season don’t expect to see a lot of colorful and sparkling below-the-belt artwork. Of course, that is not to say these fads will completely fall flat, but one of the main reasons we steer clear of fads at Waxing the City is because we know that the likelihood of this sticking around for the long run isn’t likely. So for those of you who were never really too keen on the idea of replacing your hair with more um… hair; don't worry, these less-than-fab fads are sure to fizzle out in 2013.

3. Brazilians are BIG, BARE and taking the lead

One thing that is sure to stay all year long is the Brazilian wax. A wax so popular it has made its mark all over the world from its humble roots in Brazil. This type of wax has become so popular; people are clawing their way into salons to get this bare-down-there look. We’ve even noticed at Waxing the City, that a majority of our clients no longer seek the typical shapes (landing strip or triangle) most associated with the bikini wax, but instead are taking it a step further and going for the bare-all Brazilian. And like we mentioned above, it's not just the ladies begging for this wax, guys too are asking for Brazilians. So much so, the wax has caused a bit of controversy from some medical professors. Fear not however, a reputable salon (like Waxing the City), where precautions and cleanliness are a priority, you’ll have nothing to fear.

4. The full nature eyebrow look is back and ready for action

Forget painted on eyebrows and anything in between. This year, focus one of your best assets (your eyes) on bringing out your natural qualities. The best way to accentuate your face is to keep your eyebrows evenly proportioned and define your arch. Not to say you shouldn't use eyebrow pencils, but don't go crazy. Match the pencil to your natural color, and use your facial features to define your eyebrow. Over-waxing of the eyebrow is a BIG no-no this year, and your face will pay the consequences. Bold eyebrows are beautiful and a big trend this year. But don’t get carried away, there is a fine line between a natural arch and bushy eyebrows so big you might mistake your face for a caterpillar garden.
